CURRICULUM VITAE

Professor Simon Kay FRCS, FRCS (Plas), FRCS Ed (Hon)

Summary CV

I have incepted and developed a multidisciplinary hand surgery service in this hospital which now consists of 5 hand surgeons and support teams and which now occupies a dedicated facility.

I have begun de novo a children's hand surgery service that is now one of the largest such clinics in the UK and have demonstrated convincingly the value of microsurgery in reconstruction of congenital defects of children's hands. This approach was pioneered here and has now become generally accepted.

I have researched in the fields of children’s hand reconstruction, brachial plexus surgery and continue with research into nerve repair on a joint collaborative basis with the Department of Hand Surgery in Umea. Past work has involved shared grants and future work will be on a similar basis.

I have published extensively in my fields of children's hand surgery and brachial plexus surgery.

I have co-edited the world’s major textbook in children’s hand surgery. This multi-author work is 1200 pages and took 6 years to produce. It is the most comprehensive text on children's hand surgery ever produced and has won a number of awards.

As part of my commitment to development of hand surgery I have conceived, designed and led the first series of comprehensive syllabus based European instructional courses in hand surgery on behalf of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand.

I have been a keen advocate of the Intercollegiate Specialty examinations and have been an Examiner for 4 years with the Intercollegiate Specialty Board and now represent the Royal College of Surgeons of England on the Intercollegiate Board in Plastic Surgery.

I have forged academic links with Umea University in Sweden where a busy basic science facility is dedicated to hand nerve and reconstructive surgical development. I have recognition as an Honorary Visiting Professor there, and have developed a post here for a basic science exchange that can now take postgraduate research students in these and allied disciplines for joint study to higher degrees.

I have been the Clinical Director of Plastic Surgery for Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (2000 – 2005) and played and continue to play a significant role in the management of this service, and of the Hand Surgery service.

I have been Chairman of the Local Negotiating Committee in Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust of 550 consultants and nearly 1000 junior doctors, dealing with the employment and political issues of the organisation for doctors.

I have been awarded the title of Professor of Hand Surgery at the University of Leeds

I have been the Editor of The Journal of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (2002 - 2007), formerly the British Journal of Plastic Surgery, the second largest publication in the specialty in the world. I have been responsible for reform and internationalisation of the journal.

I have been President of The British Society for Surgery of the Hand for the year 2007 . I have served on the council of the BSSH for many years and as Chairman of the Education and Research Committee of that Society.

I am Vice-president of the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons. I shall be President of that body in 2009.
