My Approach to Cosmetic Surgery

Throughout my career cosmetic surgery has been an integral part of the training and practice of Plastic Surgeons. In the UK fully trained Consultant Plastic Surgeons have had a comprehensive education in all aspects of cosmetic surgery and at a time when many clinics have sprung up to provide cosmetic surgery I think it is worth emphasising the standards that I think are important.

Nobody has to have cosmetic surgery in the way that people have to have a gallbladder removed or a cancer excised. Cosmetic surgery is something the patient chooses to have and I strongly believe therefore that no shortcuts or unwarranted risks should be taken. Firstly, it is important to select a surgeon who is fully trained in plastic surgery. We are lucky in the UK to have had for many decades comprehensive accredited plastic surgery training of a very high standard. These high standards of education and comprehensive training are not universally found elsewhere.

Secondly I believe it is wise to have your surgery in a hospital that is fully equipped to deal with any unexpected medical event. Narrowly focussed clinics are unlikely to be able to provide the same safety net of medical care as fully equipped comprehensive hospitals. Finally you should try to choose care that is as local to you as is reasonable given the specialist nature of that care, and know that if you have a problem you can return to both the surgeon and the nurses and the clinic in which you were treated with ease, and that that clinic, its doctors and nurses, will work with you and your general practitioner to provide the safest care for you. I am proud to be able to say that my practice is conducted in a comprehensively capable hospital with highly specialised anaesthetists and that my patients are cared for by highly trained very experienced plastic surgery nurses who work continuously in very close conjunction with me. Safety must always be the first concern in cosmetic surgery.
